Jack Frost Hoodie: Details by RoxyRoo Jack Frost Hoodie: Details by RoxyRoo
SUPPLIES:

Everything I bought from either Joann's Fabrics or Michael's craft stores. Sweater fabric was more expensive than I expected.

-White Sweater fabric
-White Knit
-2 Metal rivets
-String
-Elastic
-thread
-Navy Blue Rit dye
-Fabric Glue
-Silver Glitter
-Blue Glitter

:bulletblue: Roughly $40 of materials. >.>

PATTERN:

I based the original pattern from my own sweaters that I wear around the house. The hoodie is longer so it will drape properly over my bum.

The chest has these "T" stitchings in them. To do that, I just marked them with pins and cut it, then sewed it back together. You can't see to well here, but I have it on the back too. Note: the two corners come a lot closer in the back. If you look at reference images of him, you'll see this.

The hood is one large piece. There is no seam at the top of the head, but there is in the rear.

The seam at the shoulder is very round. I had to adjust that several times to get the right curve. The shape of the sleeves is close at the top and puffs out a bit past the elbow. :D That's one unique thing about the whole silhouette I noticed.

DYE:

Navy Blue Rit Dye should do the trick. Just make sure your stitching isn't freaking polymer-mixed. It has to be cotton. I have to go back still and re-do the stupid hem. >_< I dyed this stupid sweater 3 freaking times. The first two times it came out blue, but way too light. I went back a third time and got navy blue. That did the trick. :D When you do this, make sure to wash out the fabric until the water runs clear! You don't want your skin to turn blue when you finally wear it. Oh wait. It's Jack Frost. He's already blue. lol

FROSTING:

Yes. Shut up. I call it frosting. Deal with it. Basically, it's glitter and glue. Lots and lots of it. I used "Aleene's Permanent Fabric Glue" in the tipped bottle and super tiny silver glitter. The frost patterns are ... strange. In some spots they look like feathers, like on the chest, but in other spots it looks like cat scratches, like on the sleeves. Just pay close attention to which pattern goes where according to references and you should be fine. Lastly, I added some blue glitter on the sleeves because in a few pictures I found, it looks blue... Weird.

Now I have to go outside and give it a good shake. SO MUCH GLITTER AAAAAAAHHH!!!

So is there any chance at all that I could buy one of these from you?

What other colored dyes did you use before you went to Navy? :)

It was some other blue, but as long as you use the navy blue, it shouldn't matter. I only dyed it twice before because I chose the wrong color (it wasn't dark enough).

Thanks so much for saying how many times you dyed it and what dye! <3 I just did mine one time and was freaking out because of how light it was.

How did your hoodie turn out? Was it the same color as the one shown above? :)

Just get the right dye, and you shouldn't have to dye it more than once. I just chose the wrong color twice. ^^;

I guess my hoodie just has too much non-cotton fabric in it. D: I used navy blue but it came out waaaaay too light.

Yeah. It has to be at least 80% cotton for the dye to work. :/

If I sell it, it will be the entire costume, not just the sweater. I want to wear the cosplay one more time before I do, soooo... sometime this winter, check back.

I put a little, but not really, no. I didn't realize the frost went all the way around. If you look at screen shots, it really does go all around the back, there's just less of it.

I already know right now that I won't be able to make a hoodie because I'm not confident enough and pretty bad at sewing...soooo, if I bought a 100% cotton white hoodie, do you think I could dye that why the Navy Blue in order to approach this color? How about cutting into the hoodie and stitching it back to make those side stitches thingy s? I really want to make one, but I want to do it right--or as right as I can U.U btw, I've also noticed that the Jack Frost hoodie has pretty think strings....something else to keep in mind~ you did good in that.
...
please help,

Actually, sewing a hoodie is one of the easier things I've made. It's like a shirt with long sleeves and a hood attached to the neck line. >.> Anyways, you can find plain white sweatshirts at walmart and stuff. Then all you have to do is dye it, just like you said. Navy Blue was the closest color match to Jack's screenshots. Everyone else seems to go with brighter, cobalt blues, but it's really not that bright if you look at the movie stills.

Stiching it like that is totally doable. Just make sure to mark it right (you'll only get one shot, otherwise you'l have to buy another sweater). Have you seen my "making of" video?

Oh no, I haven't, do you have a link? Also, if I was to make a hoddie, how did you alter the sleeves so that they would puff a the elbow?

I didn't alter a sweater, I actually made mine from scratch, so the puffy sleeves I already build into it. ^^;

this hoodie is amazing! I've been looking at Jack Frost hoodies for a while now and yours looks so perfect to the real thing! I LOVE IT SO MUCH. Especially with the blue glitter around the cuffs, I've never seen anyone else add that! You're so talented and you did an incredible job :)
I'm so tempted to ask if I could make an offer but I know your not selling it....well, if you ever do plan on selling I'd be more than happy to make one $60 or up
