I heart both of them. I've had a crush on Reno for a long time, but my love for Axel was sorta ruined by yaoi fans. I hate you people. Anyways, enjoy teh "hot"ness.

I'm a believer in the theory. Reno, in my opinion, is Axel's somebody. The similaries are unmistakable. So I don't have to elaborate later, here's everything I've found.

Obvious similarities:

Red, spikey hair. Facial tatoos/marks. Blue/green eyes (both of their eyes seem to constantly change color in both series). Angular, slim body types. Both use a lazy way of speaking. They also share the same voice actors both in english and japanese.

Other similarities:

Both work for questionable people Axel=organization, Reno=Turks/ShinRa. Both do the Dirty work for the higher ups. Both act as both foes and allies at some point in the games. Axel's magic is fire, likewise, Reno is in one battle in FF7, immune to fire magic. EDIT: apparently it was Rude, not Reno, who was immune to Fire, and Reno was immune to Gravity. It's been a while since I played the game, but I could have sworn I had it right... O.o;;

Reno's name was never translated with an added "X" like the other organization members. However, Reno's favorite drink is Ale, an alchoholic beverage. Ale + X = Axel. 8D

EDIT#2: yes. I knew that Nomura based Axel's design off of Reno. I read an interview where he said that he wanted to know how a similar character would interact in a different world. I was tired last night so, I forgot about this.

Rumors: There's a stupid rumor going around that Axel is actually Riku's Nobody, however, Riku was never turned into a heartless. Sure he was posessed by Ansem, but possession isn't killing. D:

Another rumor was that Axel is actually Zack's Nobody. However, Zack isn't even in the game. However, again, Axel looks similar to Terra... I don't know. That's another theory.

Anyways, It's been denied constantly that Reno will appear in the game. They already have too many FF7 characters in KH already, so to me it'd be overkill to have Reno. Personally, I don't want Reno to be in KH, cuz of reasons stated in my "KH Purity Stamp" deviation [link] . This was meant just to be a "what if" deviation for fun. ^w^
