Description

The poem reads:

"We are growing still,
Statues that we are,
Behold our glory filled
with light like the stars."

This is the last of the four illustrations I did for my Geology 101 class. It was for extra credit, but I had fun experimenting with image transfer. I think I'll continue using this for random paintings. ^^ It looks really nice.

The Crystal Cave really does exist. National Geographic had a field day (quite literally) when it was discovered in Mexico deep under a mountain used for mining. The scalding hot water is pumped out like a stream, just so scientist can explore it. Even with the water gone, they have to wear protective cooling suits to shield against the heat and humidity; it's over 100 degrees fahrenheit and 100% humidity in there!). Even with the suits, they can only stand it for about 30 minutes before getting heat stroke.

The crystals are made from gypsum, a mineral gradually collected over thousands of years from the water. Each crystal is like a monolith, yet they're as soft as fingernails. They found similar caves nearby, but the Mexican mining company has decided to shut down in the area, so the opportunity to explore this wonderful place is over.

Really cool! Reminds me of the Emerald city of Oz! All you need is a horse of a different color running by!
